The media are blamed for using biased language to stigmatize Muslims. Many people believe that the media's negative portrayal of Islam is one of the most socially prevalent and significant sources of Islamophobia. This book explores how Islamophobia is reproduced in selected Malaysian newspapers from a framing perspective. Framing theory considers meaning as existing particularly in the media messages. It focuses on the influence of news viewpoints used by journalists on the audiences. The Star and New Straits Times were chosen for analysis. It was discovered that the newspapers tend to reproduce Islamophobia through the use of conflict frames, negative tone, use of photos, and sensational language. Further analysis showed that the western media’s negative content influences how newspapers report Islam in Malaysia. Journalist’s perception, corporate ownership of the media, editorial policies, government regulations, and lack of proper training amongst journalists influences news reporting of Islam. The spread of Islamophobia can be minimized through the collective effort of journalists, editors, corporate ownership of the media, and by being conflict-sensitive and restrictive to the actors.
