Valaiyapathi is one of the five great epics in Tamil literature. This abridged version is designed for easy reading and is also suitable for students and children. The epic narrates the story of Valaiyapathi who has two wives, and abandons one (Pathini) who gives birth to their son, Uthaman. Uthaman grows up and seeks his real father.The story also highlights social customs, religious rites and traditions observed by the people of that era. இந்நூல் ஐம்பெருங்காப்பியங்களில் ஒன்றான வளையாபதியின் சுருக்கப்பட்ட வடிவமாகும். இது மாணவர்களும் குழந்தைகளும் வாசிக்க எளிதான வகையில் உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இரண்டு மனைவிகளைக் கொண்ட வளையாபதி முதல் மனைவியின் சூழ்ச்சியால் இரண்டாம் மனைவி பத்தினியையும் அவளது குழந்தை உத்தமனையும் கைவிடுகிறான். உத்தமன் வளர்ந்து பெரியவன் ஆனதும் அவனது தந்தையைத் தேடிச் செல்கிறான். அக்காலத்தில் வாழ்ந்த மக்களின் பண்பாடு, பழக்க வழக்கம், போன்றவற்றையும் இக்கதை எடுத்துக்காட்டுகிறது.
